Developmental Dyslexia, ASD, fMRI
Research Description
My research concerns brain changes in developmental disorders such as developmental dyslexia, ASD and ADHD. Specifically, we are interested in brain structural and functional changes with behavioral interventions and brain stimulations. I use multiple neuroimaging techniques in my research such as EEG, fNIRS, fMRI and tACS.

Neuroimmonology
Research Description
K H Chan’s research interests include autoimmune neurological disorders (multiple sclerosis, neuromyelitis optica, autoimmune encephalitis, myasthenia gravis) and neuroinflammation of Alzheimer disease (AD). He is actively researching to develop novel immunotherapies for MS and NMO, understand AD pathophysiologies and develop personalized therapeutics for AD and other neurodegenerative diseases causing cognitive impairment.

Flexible Electronics, Sensors, Transistors
Research Description
My research focuses on flexible electronics for brain-computer interface (BCI) applications. This includes the development of conformal ECoG sensors, high-density neural probes, chemical transistor-based sensors, and integrated signal processing circuits. Our work spans from device fabrication and data acquisition to signal processing and AI algorithm development. We welcome opportunities to collaborate with researchers and partners in the BCI field.

Visual perception, Binocular Vision, Plasticity, MRI, TMS
Research Description
Prof Chang's research seeks to unravel the neural mechanisms underlying visual perception, with a particular emphasis on binocular vision (stereoscopic depth perception, sensory eye dominance) and its corresponding neuroplastic capacity. Her work uses a combination of psychophysics (perceptual learning), neuroimaging (fMRI, DTI, MRS, E/MEG), and brain stimulation (TMS) techniques.

Neurodegeneration, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's Disease Dementia, Neuroinflammation, Microglia, Microbiota, PKR
Research Description
To prevent cognitive dysfunction in Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease dementia, we should investigate the cellular and molecular mechanisms of different risk factors. Having collaborated with our colleagues in the LKS Faculty of Medicine, we have investigated how cigarette smoking, environmental pollution, wound injury, infection, surgery, stress/depression, obesity, and organ failure affect the brain. We find one communal pathway is the systemic immune responses, which can immediately trigger neuroinflammation. Consequently, neuroinflammation stimulates deposit pathological proteins in the brain and further triggers infiltration of systemic macrophages and resident microglia. Our laboratory is now investigate how infiltration of systemic macrophages occurs and how we can modulate neuroinflammation in order to attenuate progression of neurodegeneration.

Neural Crest Formation, Neurological Disease Modelling
Research Description
Embryonic development involves complex genetic regulation of cell growth, migration, and differentiation. Our research uses diverse experimental approaches to study these processes, focusing on neural crest development in melanoma and motor neuron degeneration in spinal muscular atrophy, aiming to develop therapeutic strategies for both congenital diseases and cancer treatment approaches.

Memory Persistence, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Neuron-specific Microexon, Amyloid, CPEB, Cryogenic Electron Microscopy
Research Description
My research investigates how aggregation of CPEB proteins underlies memory persistence and contributes to autism spectrum disorder. Using cryo-EM, biochemistry, and animal models, we aim to understand both functional and pathological CPEB aggregation, providing insight into long-term memory mechanisms and informing new treatments for Alzheimer’s, ASD, and related neurological diseases.

Intracellular Transportation, Microtubule, Actin, Kinesin
Research Description
Our major research interest is in the mechanism of intracellular transportation and its roles in development, neuronal function and genetic diseases. Intracellular transportation is carried out over two major cellular networks, the microtubule and actin networks.
Our studies demonstrated that myosin-VA can interact directly with the ubiquitously expressed kinesin, implying that the two transportation systems are at least partially coordinated through their motor molecules. The major interest of our group is to use transgenic and knockout mice to study the functions of kinesins in chondrocytes, neurons, and other cell types. -

Research Description
Our lab uses in vivo imaging, optogentics, chemogenetics, genetic manipulations, and behavioural approaches to understand synaptic plasticity, neural circuits, and the role of sleep in emotional learning, which will provide insight to help us to better understand the aetiology and therapeutic interventions for psychiatric disorders such as depression, schizophrenia.

Emotional Memories, Fear and Anxiety, Neurocognitive Assessment, Mental Health, Clinical Psychology
Research Description
The Laboratory of Clinical Psychology and Affective Neuroscience focuses on identifying mechanisms contributing to pathological fear and anxiety, with the goal of developing targeted interventions for affect and mood dysregulation and enhancing psychological well-being. We use a combination of physiological measures (e.g. pupillometry), functional neuroimaging (fMRI), and behavioural experiments to answer the research questions.
